Space Traveler Discloses Depression After Deluge of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

Astronaut during journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also carried well-known figures.

The mission was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said everything she had worked for – from her studies and years of training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was buried under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she said.

She concluded that even with the backlash, important benefits had resulted from the experience, such as increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that passed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The group of women also included experts in different industries.

The venture behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a well-known tech mogul.
